9/11 Project Launch

Dear Friends,

We officially launched the 2011 September 11th Ten Year Anniversary Art Project back in mid March. There was a great turnout and many signed up to join our community of volunteers to help build our art gift for the families of 9/11.  We are already creating the project groups that will facilitate different areas of this large scale endeavor and if you are interested in being involved, please contact us at: seattlevoicesproject@gmail.com.

The Art Project for this year is very special.  As I considered the past nine years of giving and how much the families had connected with us, I felt it was time to make the gifts very personal.  In years past, we created art from our own unique expression, always honoring the people who perished and their families as a group.  This year we have the ultimate opportunity to reach the families personally because we are creating art specifically to honor their loved one.

Your creation will directly benefit an entire family and create a beautiful memory for those who still are rebuilding their lives.  We already have the first sixty names given to us by Voices of September 11th. and  eventually we hope to create 300-400 flags for those families attending the forum at Ground Zero on September 11, 2011.

9/11 Tribute Flags

Imagine hundreds of flags displayed at the Voices of September 11th Family Forum at Ground Zero this September, each one thoughtfully designed by a volunteer from Washington State and inspired by the life story of someone who perished on Sept. 11, 2001.

When you sign up to create a flag, you will be given a name of a person who was lost. You can then go to www.voicesofsept11.org to look up the name of that person in the “Living Memorial Project” section. There you will be able to read all about their life, family, interests and see a of photo of them.  You will then have the opportunity to create an image to honor the person you have been assigned. Your design will be transferred to a linoleum  block that you will then carve out.  The design will then be printed onto an individual cloth Tribute Flag by one of our printing volunteers.  Also, three prints on paper will be created for you to sign.  These will be packaged and given to the families on September 11th, along with your personal note about your creation and the original linoleum block as a keepsake.

The amount of time it takes to carve out a  4” X 6” linoleum block is about 2 hours. If you would like a larger format, the next size would be 6” x 8” . To get started on your Tribute Flag, you first need to get the name of the person you will be honoring. You obtain that by emailing us at seattlevoicesproject@gmail.com. Then come to the Studio during one of the times listed here Open Studio Dates where we will provide you with all the materials that you need to do your flag. If you prefer to work on your linoleum blocks independently, you will have to purchase a linoleum cutter (approx. $12) and we will provide the block.

I look forward to working with all of you as we create art to honor and remember those who perished on 9/11.  We will be representing the state of Washington in this project and we are one of a few states that have supported the families every year. This Tenth Anniversary Art Project will mark a decade of giving from Washington State to the families of 9/11.
